Ruth was born on April 2, 1935, in Burnet, Texas to L.A. and Ima Lee Kuykendall and spent most of her childhood in Midland, Texas. She graduated from Midland High School in 1953. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Abilene Christian University in 1957, a Master of Science in Education from Abilene Christian University in 1962, and a Master of Arts degree in Museum Science from Texas Tech University in 1981.She taught at Atkins Middle School in Lubbock, Texas; Madison Junior High School in Abilene, Texas; and Meadow Public Schools in Meadow, Texas. Throughout her teaching career she attended seminars and workshops at Loretto College in Denver, Colorado, Abilene Christian University, “The Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.” and Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. While working on her Masters degree at Texas Tech, she served as a docent and developed and implemented several programs and tours for the Museum of Texas Tech and the Ranching Heritage Center. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, serving as President of Mu Chapter in Abilene; Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock, Texas; South Plains Church of Christ in Lubbock, Texas; Amity Study Club in Lubbock, Texas; and the Democratic Party.Ruth was passionate about cooking, reading, traveling, teaching Ladies Bible Classes at Broadway Church of Christ, and being with her granddaughter, Elisabeth.Ruth is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, George Sorensen; their loving son, Jon and his caring wife Sarah; and dear granddaughter, Elisabeth, all of Lubbock.In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to a charity of your choice or Hospice of Lubbock, 3702 21st Street, Lubbock TX 79410, in honor of Ruth Sorensen.
