Ruben Peralez Hinojosa was born on November 21, 1943, to Modesto and Eloisa Peralez Hinojosa in the small yet loving town of Martindale, Texas. He had 13 siblings; Modesto, Ernest, Richard, Jamie, Gilbert, Esmo, Jimmy, Danny Fred, Wille, Eloy, Sally, and Tomasa. Ruben knew how to light up a room. From his earliest days, he carried an unmistakable charm and a mischievous twinkle in his eye, always keeping those around him smiling with his sharp sense of humor.
He met Alicia Cruz in the summer of 1981, and their connection blossomed into a love story grounded in faith and joy. They exchanged vows in Lubbock, Texas, on December 21, 2001, and spent their days together building a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unforgettable family memories. He and Alicia relished time with loved ones, enjoyed cooking up mouthwatering BBQ, and could often be found dancing to the rhythm of Tejano music.
Ruben devoted 28 years to his work at First Christian Church, retiring on November 30, 2008, with a legacy of dedication and care. Known affectionately by his grandchildren as “Swaggy,” he had a special way of bringing energy and light-hearted fun to every moment. He was the kind of grandfather who made life feel magical, often the partner-in-crime who could turn any day into an adventure.
Ruben’s love for sports was unwavering. A fierce supporter of the Dallas Cowboys, he cheered them on through every triumph and challenge. His admiration for Patrick Mahomes began in the quarterback’s days at Texas Tech, inspiring Ruben to also follow the Kansas City Chiefs with the same passion. His enthusiasm and joy were contagious, whether he was watching a game or telling a story.
A profound loss occurred when his beloved Alicia passed away on December 2, 2023, leaving an emptiness that touched the hearts of all who knew him. It was clear that a part of his vibrant spirit departed with her, as he grieved her absence deeply.
Ruben is survived by his devoted children: Annette (Rudy) Torres, Joe (Josephine) Cruz, Christina (Scott) Stofel, and Lindsey Hinojosa, all of Lubbock.
He cherished his role as a grandfather to Valerie Rivera, Jennifer Mata, Mariah Torres, Giselle Torres, Amanda Cruz, Valentin Baca, Malorie Stofel, Jordan Stofel, Addison Puga, Jazlyn Deleon, His love and warmth extended to his great-grandchildren Lulane Rivera, Maddie Mata, Pete Mata, Ayden Espino, Avayah Ramirez, Elliana Hernandez, Griffin Fritz, and Layla Ramirez.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Modesto and Eloisa Hinojosa. Daughter, Irma Hinojosa. Son, Raymond Aguilar. Brothers, Jaime, Danny, Willie Hinojosa, and his granddaughter, Loraine Arredondo.
Ruben’s legacy is captured in the countless stories of his humor, generosity, and boundless energy. His life remains an example of finding happiness in small moments, spreading laughter, and loving unconditionally. His unforgettable spirit will live on in the hearts of those who shared his journey.
