Roger Don McMillan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated pilot, passed away on June 2, 2025, just before his 83rd birthday. Born June 5, 1942, in Lubbock, Texas, to Durward (Dave) McMillan and Neta Watson McMillan. He grew up in New Moore, Texas and attended school in O’Donnell. Roger spent his early years in O’Donnell, and after graduating from high school, he attended Texas Tech University.
Roger served in the US Army SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) in Mons, Belgium. After discharge, he returned to Texas Tech University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. Roger embraced an adventurous and fulfilling life.
After college, he worked in the pharmaceutical field for a few years before embarking on his real career and passion, flying. He flew everything from small 2-seater planes to jets in his almost 50-year career and often said if it has wings, he would/could/and wanted to fly it. He also served as a flight instructor and taught many other people how to fly and mentored many young pilots.
He married his first love, Gloria Nelson McMillan, in 1964 and sadly parted ways in 1989. He met his second love Eunice Smith McMillan in 1996, and they married in 1997. During their marriage they traveled all over and even buzzed sheep once in his 2-seater airplane. Eunice was not crazy about that particular maneuver but, of course, Roger was. He also loved to ride his motorcycles and traveled all over the United States and Canada on them. Roger loved any and everything that involved speed.
Roger was known for his unwavering commitment to his family and his deep passion for aviation. He worked for many years with AeroCare, where his skill and dedication as a pilot were matched only by his kindness and integrity. As a husband to Eunice McMillan, he exemplified love and partnership. As a father, he inspired his sons, Gary and Gregory, nurturing them with wisdom and strength. His legacy continues through his daughter Jessica and his cherished grandchildren, Kiersten Rupp, Tatiana “Tati” Smith, Valton “Button” Stephens, niece and nephew, Kevin Shipp and Tiffany McMillan-Flanagan, all of whom hold dear the countless memories made with their Roger.
Roger passed on June 2, 2025, at his home surrounded by his wife, dogs and many of his loved ones.
Roger is survived by his wife of 28 years, Eunice, three children, Gary M. Smith of Lubbock, Gregory D. Smith (Amber) of Lawton, OK, and Jessica C. Stephens, of Lubbock; and three grandchildren, Kiersten Smith Rupp (Mason), of Austin, Tatiana (Tati) Smith and Valton “Button” Stephens, both of Lubbock. He is also survived by the children of his deceased brother, Gary McMillan, his beloved nephew, Kevin Shipp of Sioux Falls, SD, and his beloved niece, Tiffany McMillan Flanagan (Corey), of Lubbock.
The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating Roger’s life to honor his memory and the joy he brought to so many, at the celebration of Roger’s life on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, followed by a time of fellowship with family and friends.
