Wayne was born at a farmhouse in Haskell to Robert Poer and Caroline Midora Porter Poer on September 17, 1938. The son of a farmer, Wayne grew up hoeing fields, milking cows, and performing necessary tasks to run the farm. Farm life for Wayne included lots of work and responsibilities. His family moved to New Home, TX, and became part of the fabric of the small community. Wayne was active in football, basketball, and FFA, with a state team championship in livestock judging. He was popular, athletic, academically astute, and loved to have fun. In his senior year of high school, he was voted homecoming king.
Wayne attended Texas Tech University until he and Hallie Hartsfield married in 1958. In the next seven years, the couple had two daughters; Lynna and Dana, and a son; Robert. Wayne’s roots called him back, and the family settled down in New Home, where Wayne continued the family farming tradition. Wayne was heavily involved in supporting his children in sports and FFA activities.
In 1987, Wayne married Shirley on New Year’s Day. They settled in Lubbock, where they enjoyed each other immensely as a couple and the experiences of a blended extended family. The couple enjoyed hosting family and friends at their Colorado cabin. If they were not hosting family and friends, they were visiting them. Wayne’s favorite pastime when he was in Lubbock was to visit the farm.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of 34 years; his children Lynna (Curtis), Dana (Mark), Robert (Wendy), and stepdaughters Sheryl and Renee. Wayne had nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many other extended family members.
Wayne was preceded in death by his father, Robert; mother, Caroline; brother, Skeek; first-wife, Hallie; and step-son Johnny.
