Robert Joe Montgomery, 75, of Lubbock Texas, formerly of Muleshoe, Texas, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2023.
Robert was born on December 19, 1946, in Plainview Texas, to Joe and Anne Montgomery. He married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Bernethy on July 13, 1968, in Littlefield Texas. In 1969 they moved to Amarillo Texas, to attend West Texas State University in Canyon Texas, and he began his banking career with The First National Bank in Amarillo Texas. In 1977 they moved to Muleshoe, where he was employed by Muleshoe State Bank. He served the bank as Cashier, Vice President, Executive Vice President, and President. He retired in 2013 but remained on the Board of Directors until 2017. They moved to Lubbock in October 2012.
Robert was very active in civic affairs in Muleshoe. He was President of Muleshoe Chamber of Commerce for 2 years and they honored him as Man of the Year in 1993. That same year he helped to secure Governor Ann Richards to speak at the Chamber of Commerce Banquet. He was Mayor of Muleshoe for 8 years, from 1992-2000. He received the Distinguished Service Award at the Bankers Agriculture Credit Conference for his loyal and dedicated service to the commercial banking profession in 2008. After his retirement from banking, he served on the Appraisal Review Board for the Lubbock Central Appraisal District for 6 years serving as Chairman.
His most precious memories were spending time with his family and especially the individual trips that he took with his grandchildren. Family time was very important to him.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents; a brother Mike Montgomery; and his in-laws J.D. and Laverne Bernethy. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; a daughter, Amy Reuter and her husband Paul of Austin; a son Chad Montgomery and his wife Kristin of Lubbock; six grandchildren; Blake, Kate, and Luke Reuter of Austin and Madden, Maren, and McLaine Montgomery of Lubbock; a sister Cyndi Peel and her husband Mike of Del Rio, Texas; a sister Dianne Lavake of Zapapta, Texas; a brother-in-law Gary Bernethy and his wife Kay of Jarrell Texas; a sister-in-law Freda Montgomery of Lubbock; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
The family is not currently planning a memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family has designated Hospice of Lubbock to donate in memory of Robert.
