Rita Castaneda Cantu, a cherished and beloved woman, passed away on June 14, 2023. Born on August 21, 1931, in Taft, TX. Rita was the daughter of Alberto and Victoria Castaneda (deceased). She was the oldest of eleven siblings, including Susie Garza, Emily Perez (deceased), Alberto Castaneda, Juan Castaneda, Elvia Garza, Rosa Lyga, Lupe Gonzales (deceased), Frank Castaneda, Victor Castaneda, and Janie Gutierrez.
Rita was a woman of strength and determination, known for her tireless work ethic. She established her own business in Brownfield, TX, where she opened the renowned restaurant, Las Palmas. Her culinary talents brought joy to many, and her dedication inspired others.
Family held a special place in Rita’s heart. She was the loving mother of seven children: Epimeñio Cantu (Ester), Hermiñia Cantu, Gloria Cantu (deceased), Mary Ann Espinosa (Ralph), Linda Herrera (Paul), Rita Hernandez (Eddie), and Richard Cantu (Janie). Rita’s nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family, as she also embraced the role of grandmother to twenty-four grandchildren, great-grandmother to sixty-eight, and great-great-grandmother to nine. Her love and care created lasting bonds that will be cherished for generations to come.
Rita’s zest for life was contagious. She had a deep passion for music and found joy in singing and dancing. Her favorite saying, “Shake it but don’t break it,” exemplified her vibrant spirit. As a young girl, she delighted in watching Spanish movies at the Majestic Theater and possessed a delightful sense of humor that lit up any room. Rita’s love for dancing knew no bounds, as she gracefully moved to the rhythms of the jitterbug, mambo, and twist.
Throughout her life, Rita embodied resilience and beauty, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy will endure, and her memory will forever be treasured by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
