The family of Richard “Harold” Flournoy will celebrate his life of 84 years at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Southcrest Baptist Church. His family will host a time of fellowship and remembrance from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, December 14, 2020, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Harold Flournoy died Saturday, November 28, 2020. In support of the health of his family, face coverings are mandatory while attending the services. The service will be live-streamed on this page, where you are encouraged to sign the virtual guestbook and share memories and expressions of sympathy.Harold was born on September 6, 1936, to Luther & Jewell Flournoy in Jud, Texas, Haskell County. He was known to many as ‘Uncle Harold.’ He attended Frenship Elementary & Middle school then moved into the Cooper school district as a Freshman. There he met Melva Roberts on the school bus, they dated, and he graduated in 1954. They married on August 28, 1954. They began farming west of Slide, TX in 1955. He also worked at Slide Co-op Gin until 1957, when he decided to start custom cotton stripping. He was on the Slide Co-op Gin Board of Directors and was on the Lubbock Cotton Growers’ Board of Directors. In 1964, Harold joined the Lubbock Fire Department. He worked his way up the ranks and retired in 1988 as District Chief. While on the Fire Department, he had started a part-time appliance repair business and continued farming. He later formed and operated Flournoy Crop Insurance Agency.When he retired from farming, the crop insurance business was a way to keep up with the farming industry. Talking about farming was always his passion. Harold & Melva enjoyed traveling with the Lady Raider basketball teams to Hawaii, Europe and cruising to various other places. They also traveled with Lady Raider golfers to Puerto Rico a couple of times. He was an avid Red Raider fan of football, basketball, baseball and was a member of the Red Raider Club. Harold loved to play golf at least three times a week after retiring. He shot his age over 100 times. People ask him about that, and he replied, “Oh, it’s easy; you just have to get old.”Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Luther & Jewell Flournoy.Survivors include the love of his life, Melva; his son Rick (Staci) of Burleson, TX; his daughter Renee Taylor (Steve) of Lubbock, TX; his sister Frances Bilbrey (Jimmy); brother Jim Flournoy (Betty); nine grandchildren, Julie Vu (Angelo), Stephanie Baird (Brent), Tisha Gonzalez (Mario), Madison Baker (Chris), Heather Kubsch (Jacen), and Ricky Taylor (Kim). Harold was a member of Southcrest Baptist Church.
