Phila May Weatherly graced this world for 84 remarkable years, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She was born on July 24, 1940, in Hereford, Texas, to G.B. “Pete” and Lila Myrl Crow Buske. Phila’s life was built on faith, family, friendship, and fun.
On December 27, 1958, she married the love of her life, Philip Clyde Weatherly, in Friona, Texas. Their 66 years of unwavering devotion to each other were rooted in their shared faith and strong work ethic. Whether working on the farm or adventuring in the Colorado mountains, Phila embraced life to the fullest. She balanced hard work with grace, nurturing her family and community with strength and love.
Phila’s passion for beauty and color extended beyond the home. A proud graduate of Jesse Lee’s Beauty School, she dedicated over 50 years to her career as a beautician, including two decades as the owner and operator of The Cut Above in Crested Butte, Colorado. Her love of friendship led her to create the Butte Beauties, a women’s ski club for those over 40, fostering years of camaraderie and laughter.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. An active member of the Baptist church, she served as an associational Acteens director and as a deacon’s wife for many years. Phila’s love for both people and the Lord shone through in every relationship she nurtured. She was quick-witted, sassy, and honest, a constant encourager to friends and family. A overcomer in every sense, she triumphed over cancer twice, embodying resilience and hope.
Phila’s life was filled with simple joys—playing bridge with her sisters and their husbands, dominoes with her family, offering wisdom to those captive in her beauty shop chair, expressing love through homemade ice cream and red velvet cakes, enjoying tennis and skiing with loved ones, and, of course, shopping.
Above all, she cherished her family: her beloved husband, Philip; her children, Park Weatherly and wife Tracy of Lubbock; Pepper Weatherly and wife Darla of Rio Rancho, NM; and Penni Hudson and husband Matt of Nairobi, Kenya; her grandchildren, Nicole (Kevin) Goodman, Clayton (Sarah) Weatherly, Blakley Weatherly, Brady Stark, Alexandria Weatherly, Addison Weatherly, Holden (Megan) Hudson, and Haden (Matt) Marrs; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Deanne Styles, Lila Vars, and BK (Janet) Buske.
Phila was preceded in death by her parents, G.B. “Pete” and Lila Myrl Buske.
Her legacy is one of joy, faith, and authenticity. She loved deeply, cherished friendship, and embraced life to the fullest. Her colorful spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
