Patricia “Patti” McCarthy, 76, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. A devoted nurse, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Patti dedicated her life to serving others with compassion, strength, and unwavering love.
Born on February 16, 1949, in Lubbock, Texas, to Bob and Betty Garrett Hunter, Patti was raised with the values of kindness, hard work, and faith. She carried those values with her throughout her life, especially in her decades-long career as a nurse in West Texas. Patti’s gentle spirit and healing touch left an indelible mark on countless lives, both in and out of the hospital.
In addition to her nursing career, Patti spent many years working alongside her family at their business, Hunter Millworks. She took great pride in contributing to the craftsmanship and legacy of the company her family built. Whether helping with administrative tasks or offering a listening ear and a steady hand, she was an integral part of the business and its continued success.
Patti also found great joy in tending her garden. Her green thumb brought beauty and life to every corner of her yard. Time in the garden was sacred to Patti — a time for reflection, peace, and nurturing the things she loved.
One of the most cherished chapters of Patti’s life was her time spent in Nacogdoches, Texas, where she lived in a cozy log cabin nestled in the woods. There, she raised goats and chickens, embracing a peaceful, rural lifestyle that brought her immense joy. Patti loved the rhythm of life in the Piney Woods — collecting eggs in the morning, tending to her animals, and enjoying quiet evenings on the porch. During this time, she formed deep and lasting friendships with neighbors and fellow homesteaders who became like family. The community she found in Nacogdoches was a source of comfort, laughter, and shared purpose, and those relationships remained close to her heart.
She was a loving and faithful partner to her husband, Justin McCarthy, with whom she shared many joyful years of marriage, partnership, and family. Together, they built a life filled with enduring love, shared purpose, and treasured memories.
Patti’s greatest pride was her family. She is survived by her children, Jason Paul and his wife, Tina; Amy Smith and her husband, Jeff; and Meredith Paul Moir and her husband, Kent; and her beloved grandchildren Jack, Mazie, Payton, Lucas, Ian and his wife, Regan, Emily, Marshall, and Sage. She was the ever-supportive “Mom” and “Grandma Pat, Mama Pat, Nana and Texas Nanny” who never missed a milestone and never let a birthday pass without a card and a call.
She is also survived by her dear sisters, Beckie Poole and her husband Dan, Jenny Keith and her husband Walt, with whom she shared a lifelong bond rooted in laughter and sisterhood. Patti is preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Betty Hunter, and her brother, Charles Hunter.
Patti’s life was a testament to love in action — whether she was comforting a patient, harvesting tomatoes, or helping manage the family business. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Meals on Wheels of Lubbock, a cause that Patti held close to her heart.
