On January 28, 1932, Newell Barker, Jr. was born to Grace and Newell Barker Wallace in Detroit, MI, and was raised in Boca Raton, FL. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1950. Class of 1954, Wally attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. While at UV, he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and served as Chapter President his Senior year while also a member of the “V” Club lettering in varsity swimming. Wally served in the Army from 1955-1957 as 1st Lt. 101st Airborne Division. After his military service, he joined General Motors in 1958 and spent fifteen years in various roles, including District Manager for Cadillac in Lubbock, TX. After leaving GM in 1973, he briefly owned Texas Wrecker until he sold the business to enter into McDonald’s. In 1975 while in training, he met his bride-to-be, and on July 28, 1977, Wally married Leila Faye Wells in Cleburne, TX. Wally graduated from Hamburger University and opened his first franchise store, spending 1975-1993 as Owner/Operator of six locations in Fort Worth, TX, alongside Faye each step of the way. In 1993 they sold their McDonald’s locations and retired to Lubbock, TX. For nearly thirty years, Wally was an avid Texas Tech fan following their football, baseball, and basketball teams and would often be seen wearing his Tech attire in support. Throughout his life, he enjoyed piloting, traveling all over the world, and especially loved taking cruises. In service to his communities, Wally joined the East Fort Worth Rotary Club in 1980 and continued a nearly forty-year perfect attendance record with Greater Southwest Lubbock Rotary Club until 2019. A devoted Christian, Wally faithfully sought church every Sunday morning, no matter where he and Faye were. During his time in Lubbock they attended Lakeview Methodist Church. Wally loved the Lord and his family above all else.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Wallace; their children, Anne James, Jack (Kari) Crone, Liz (John) Givens, Sandy (Sam) Nichols; grandchildren, Jennifer Crone, Cody (Jessica) Crone, Johnathan (Cody) Givens, Jessica Sepeda, Austin James, Stephanie Holloway; great-grandchildren, Madison Crone, Reese Crone, Kaylee Givens, Khloe Sepeda, Kade Sepeda, Kamriella Givens, Tripp Givens, Olivia Givens.
He was preceded in death by parents, Grace and Newell Barker Wallace; brother, Donald James Wallace.
