Marlene Phyllis Baker, 92, of Lubbock, passed away at home Sunday, August 8, 2021, surrounded by her family.Marlene was born on August 18, 1928, to Fred and Matilda Minor in Los Angeles, CA. She grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She attended school in Chicago, IL, where she met and later married James William Baker. They continued to live in Chicago where they had their only daughter, Cheryl, before a job relocation to Arlington, Texas, in 1958. Jim and Marlene remained in Arlington until Jim’s death in 2009. While in Arlington, Marlene was very active in the community as PTA president and Girl Scout leader. She was involved in various small quilting groups, became a lifetime member of the Arlington Women’s Club, and the Arlington Quilt Guild. Marlene also attended First Presbyterian Church, where she was heavily involved in all aspects of the church. Marlene moved to Lubbock in 2010 to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren. She soon became active in the South Plains Quilt Guild and her church Westminster Presbyterian.She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, quilt shows, flowers, gardening, being outdoors, and traveling the world. Marlene dearly loved her family, friends, and neighbors, and will be remembered for her kindness, sense of humor, beautiful smile, artistic talents, creativity, and her life stories.Marlene is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James Baker.She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Jones, and her husband, Steve. Granddaughters; Kara Jones, Kymbre Jones, both of Lubbock; grandson, Karson Jones of Dallas; great granddaughter Karlee Jones of Lubbock; Cousins, Jimmy Stickley & wife Mariann of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Sharon Carlson of Dubuque, Iowa.Visitation will be Friday, August 13, 2021, from 6-8 at Lake Ridge Chapel. Services will be at 2:00 pm on August 14, 2021, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Graveside is at 11:00 am on August 21, 2021, at Moore Funeral Home in Arlington, Tx.
