Mackey Kyle Hancock was born February 18, 1948, in Lubbock, Texas, to Gladys and Kyle Hancock. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Toni Hancock. Family was the love and center of Mackey’s life. He is survived by Dr. Jeff Hancock and wife Starr of Lubbock, Rev. Justin Hancock and wife Dr. Lisa Hancock of Dallas, and Sgt. Jason Hancock of Lubbock. His grandchildren were the pure joy of his life: Hope Hancock and Brax Hancock of Lubbock and Angus Hancock of Dallas. Mackey’s favorite pastimes were watching his grandchildren in organized sports or just in his backyard, and traveling with his wife and friends.
He is survived by sister Judy Davis of Slaton and two uncles: Harvey Hancock of Slaton and Roy Webb of Ransom Canyon, as well as many cousins. Included in Mackey’s family circle is the Crusaders Sunday School class at St. Luke’s Methodist Church where he was a member for 45 years and the Man Cave Bible Study group.
Mackey was a graduate of Seminole High School, Texas Tech, and Texas Tech School of Law. His professional career included assistant criminal district attorney, private practice, Judge of County Court #2, Vice President General Counsel for NTS Communication, Judge of County Court #3, Judge of 99th District Court, and Justice on the Seventh Court of Appeals.
Mackey also had 31 years commissioned service in the U.S. Army Reserves where he retired as Colonel. Many of his deepest friendships were formed as he served as Battalion Commander of 413th Civil Affairs and Commander of 321st CA Brigade. His deployments included Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, and Afghanistan.
Mackey’s community involvement included serving on the following boards: Lubbock Police Advisory Board, Youth Corps, Lubbock County Bar Association, Board of Directors, State Bar Judicial Section, Goodwill, and Scout Master of Troop 522. He was a cofounder of the Lubbock Business Association and served on the Administrative Board of St. Luke’s Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Methodist Church on Thursday, June 12 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside following.
