Lucy is survived by her daughter, Carol; son, Steve and wife, Liane; grandchildren, Cole and wife, Betsy Cowling and their daughter Annie and son due in August, of Houston; Clay and wife, Erin Cowling and their sons, Clayton and Thomas of Houston; Cody and wife, Blair Cowling of Midland; Landry Locke of Austin; and Lauren Locke of Dallas. Lucy is predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Tom, and her parents.
Lucy was born on April 3, 1931, to Edgar and Ruth Wommack in Bonham, Texas. She graduated from Bonham High School, where she was the salutatorian of her class. After attending Texas Christian University for one year and Texas Tech University for one and one-half years, she transferred to the University of Texas, and graduated in 1952. Lucy married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Edward Locke, on January 9, 1954 in Lubbock, upon his return from serving in the Korean War.
Lucy was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority at the University of Texas and had been a member of the Ko Shari Social Club during her time at Texas Tech. She was a member of the Lubbock Country Club and the Ladies Golf Association and delighted in writing the “Clubber” article for many years. Lucy was a sustaining member of the PEO, Chapter CF and the Junior League of Lubbock, where she served in several capacities. For many years she taught Sunday School and was a pianist in the primary department before joining the Alathean Class. Lucy was a member of First Baptist Church for over 75 years, and was currently a member of the Samaritan Sunday School Class.
Lucy loved the game of bridge and was a member of numerous bridge clubs including the A.C.B.L. of Duplicate Bridge. In her earlier years, Lucy actively engaged in tennis and tennis tournaments for over 45 years. In 1971, she received the Marion Philbrick Award which was bestowed on the “person contributing the most to tennis in Lubbock.” When Lucy was physically no longer able to play tennis, she began playing golf and actively participated in that for numerous years with many dear and special friends.
Lucy was passionate about her faith, church, family and friends. Her greatest blessings were the special love she had for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was able to take them on wonderful trips to special places and enjoyed cheering from the stands in any events that they participated in. Lucy was active in PTA and was a room mother and Camp Fire leader for many years. Lucy also loved Texas Tech sports – a passion she and Tom enjoyed together as season ticket holders.
The family wishes to extend their enormous gratitude to their special friend and angel caregiver, Reyna Perez. They are also grateful to Adams Assisted Living, especially Tressa, Elena, Brittany, Rachael, Kim, LaQuinta, Tammy and Linda for their safekeeping, care and support during her final days.
