The family of Linda Mae Swacina of Lubbock, Texas, is saddened to announce her death at her home on Feb. 9, 2025. She was 67.
Linda was born Oct. 8, 1957, in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, the daughter of Douglas Swacina and Henrietta Guelzow Swacina.
Her parents and older brother Dwane moved to Arkansas in 1968, living in Pine Bluff for two years before settling in Springdale. The Swacinas joined Good Sheppard Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, where Linda played the organ during services while she was a teenager. She graduated from Springdale High School in 1975, enrolling at the University of Arkansas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in Spanish.
Linda soon moved to the suburbs of Washington, D.C., where she worked in the halls of Congress, at the White House and within government agencies. Notably, she was an aide to Vice President George H. W. Bush. She also followed in her father’s footsteps by taking a post with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1991, Linda graduated from George Mason Law School and passed the bar in Florida, setting her sights on living in Miami. She attained her career goal by becoming Miami district director of Immigration and Naturalization Services. She was always particularly proud to conduct swearing-in ceremonies for new citizens. Linda loved to travel and saw multiple countries through work and with friends. No matter where she was, she enjoyed shopping. She was an avid reader, a news junkie and had a wicked sense of humor. She pampered her nephews and spent each Christmas with family.
Linda retired in 2020 amid declining health and moved to Lubbock to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her ashes will join theirs at the Fairview Cemetery in Fayetteville, Ark.
She is survived by her brother Dwane Swacina and his wife, Kim, of Lubbock; two nephews, Steven Swacina of Dallas, and Brian Swacina, of Lubbock; many lifelong friends; and her dog Shiloh, who has found a good home.
Memorial donations may be made in Linda’s name to A Place to Call Home, County Road 1640, Wolfforth, TX, 79382. This is a facility where individuals with special abilities have a place to live a meaningful and purpose-filled life. Linda’s nephew, Brian, attends this program
