Jerry was born to L.G. and Agnes Smith in Meridian, Mississippi, on October 4, 1929. He moved to Lubbock at an early age and graduated from Lubbock High School. He joined the Navy in May 1948 and served in the Korean War until January 1952 aboard the USS Boxer receiving several medals and commendations. After attending Texas Tech, Jerry married Martha Carr in Clovis, New Mexico. They had two children, Paula and Bryan Smith. Jerry owned South Plains Refrigeration for 35 years. Jerry and his son, Bryan, had many friends at Hillcrest Country Club where they enjoyed golf. He was active in the Coronado Booster Club, President in 1976. Jerry coached Little League through Babe Ruth Baseball for 8 years and Youth League football. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church.Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and son, Bryan. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Martha, and his daughter, Paula Smith; granddaughter, Amber Lucero and husband Max; granddaughter, Jessica Smith Griggs and husband Austin; great-grandson, Deagan Griggs; granddaughter, Melonie Smith; nephew Randy and wife, Lisa Swearengen; and their children Travis and Billie Swearengen; sister, Corrine Ferguson, and several nieces and nephews outside the Lubbock area.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Meals on Wheels and The Animal Haven.
