Lela Contreras, born on March 26, 1933, in Gonzales, Texas, was a beacon of love and generosity, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her. Her radiant smile and heartwarming presence were a testament to her loving nature, offering comfort and solace to all around her. Lela was a devout Catholic; her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, guiding her through life’s journey. She embodied the verse from Corinthians 16:14, “Let all that you do be done in love,” living it out in her daily actions and interactions.
Lela was a doting wife to her late husband, Joe Raymond Contreras, whom she married on February 10, 1964. Their love story was one of shared values, deep understanding, and unwavering commitment. Lela was also a beloved daughter, born to Nato Costello and Elizabeth Alaniz, who preceded her in death, leaving her legacy of love and kindness to continue. Those of us who were blessed to be touched by her understand that her existence and the imprint she left on our hearts will exceed the quantity of time. She was very talented and adventurous in many aspects of her life, from being a master in the kitchen to her unmatched sense of humor. She had a fantastic collection of baseball caps, Elvis Presley and Mickey Mouse memorabilia. Still, she cherished most of all her family – which undoubtedly was her most significant achievement in life. The family was Lela’s utmost priority; she was the supportive rock, the thoughtful listener, and the loving matriarch who held everyone together.
