Larry “Jerry” Lowrey was born December 20, 1947, to Carl Daniel and Dora Ferne (Bearden) Lowrey in Brownfield, TX. He was the youngest of four boys. He attended Plains ISD from first grade to 12th grade. Jerry was very active in his high school years; he was the Chaplin for FFA, ran track and was a powerhouse football player, played nose guard, and was All-District. He graduated from Plains High School in 1967 in which he began his farming career. Jerry farmed in Yoakum County for 40+ years when he retired in 2017.
Jerry married Patti Bumpass in May 1973 and was married for 18 years until her passing in 1991. They had one daughter, Tammy Jo Lowrey, and Jerry was so proud of her. Jerry coached Tammy’s little dribblers’ teams when she was younger and never missed anything she ever participated in, including up until his passing.
Jerry married Del Fry on March 7, 1997, they lived in Tokio, Texas until they moved to Lubbock, Texas in October 2008. In Lubbock, he was a member of the South Park Baptist Church, in which he was very active in bible school and other church activities.
If you ask anyone about Jerry Lowrey, they would all say, “he is such a great, kind guy.” Jerry was a very funny, loving, and gentle man, but you knew it when he had it. On the farm when something would go wrong and colorful language would sometimes spill out, he would tell the nephews “I’m tired of teaching y’all of what not to do.”
Jerry was an avid model train collector. He had his own “man cave” building with an air conditioner & heater in his backyard where he had his train sets set up and running; he loved getting the trains to run for family and friends.
Jerry loved his family, and they loved him. He loved the nieces and nephews but especially the great-nieces and nephews. He made many of their activities from sports games, stock shows to singing gigs. Jerry, himself, would even belt out a tune here and there.
He is survived by his wife, Del Lowrey; daughter, Tammy Lowrey; brothers, Roy (Hazel) Lowrey, and Melvin (Serena) Lowrey; three nephews; and four nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ferne Lowrey; a brother, Coy Lowrey; and a nephew, Chad.
