He served in the National Guard for two years while finishing up high school in Carlsbad, NM in 1957. After attending one semester at Abilene Christian College, Kyle served in the United States Navy as a Private, Second Class from 1958-1962. He had intensive Romanian language training before he was stationed in Turkey, as well as serving on the USS Independence, USS Saratoga, and USS Forrestal aircraft carriers. While stationed in Winter Harbor, ME, he met and married the love of his life, Patsy Lee Strout, on October 31, 1961. From there, they moved to El Paso, TX and then to Monahans, TX, where he worked in the oil fields.
