Kitty Oglesby Murray

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, Kitty Oglesby Murray. She peacefully went to sleep in the Lord, surrounded by family, on October 1^st at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. Born on a spring day in Colfax, Louisiana, Kitty graced this world with her gentle spirit and unwavering resolve. It is with both sorrow and gratitude that we celebrate her life and the profound impact she had on all who knew her.

Kitty’s journey began in Verda, Louisiana, where she cultivated a love for learning and a thirst for knowledge. As co-valedictorian of her high school class, she embarked on a path of education, fueled by a deep desire to become a missionary nurse. Her dreams led her to work at the State Institution for the Insane in Pineville, Louisiana, and subsequently to the North Louisiana Sanitarian Nursing School in Shreveport. Her passion for caring for others remained a guiding force throughout her life.

In 1945, Kitty exchanged vows with the love of her life, Johnny Alexander Murray. They built a life together in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, where they raised three children, Mike, Ginger, and John. Their union was marked by unwavering devotion and mutual support. In 2008, after 62 years of marriage, Johnny passed away in Lubbock, Texas, leaving behind a void that Kitty carried with grace and strength.

Kitty and Johnny embarked on a 56-year journey owning and operating Murray’s Home Furnishings. Their dedication and hard work supplied their community with furniture, appliances, and hardware and served as a testament to their resilience and tenacity.

Faith played a profound role in Kitty’s life, and she found solace and strength within the walls of the First Baptist Church of Pleasant Hill and later, the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. A devoted member, she served as a Sunday Class Teacher for an incredible 50 years, sharing her wisdom and love for God with all who crossed her path.

Kitty’s involvement also included community, as she served as a Director for the Sabine Library Board and as the Director of the North Sabine Missionary Union, enriching the lives of others through her unwavering dedication. Her sense of service was also evident through her involvement with Seniors R Special where she dedicated her time as a volunteer, UMW, Texas Boys and Girls Ranch, and Childrens Home of Lubbock, where, along with her daughter, she sponsored several children on weekends and Holidays ensuring that they experienced the joy and love of a nurturing family.

Kitty’s love for her family knew no bounds. She cherished her children, Mike and his wife, Julia; Ginger; and John. Her joy multiplied with the arrival of five grandchildren, Angela Murray, Kimberly Mynes, and husband, Brad; Michael Murray and wife, Kristi; Matthew Murray and wife, Jessica; and the late Jordan Boydstun, who filled her heart with abundant love and fond memories. As her legacy continued to unfold, Kitty was blessed with eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, each one a testament to her enduring legacy of love.

She was preceded in death by her parents, eight siblings, husband, Johnny Murray, and grandson, Jordan Boydstun.

Away from her professional and community endeavors, Kitty found solace in simple pleasures. Her green thumb brought forth beautifully blooming flowers, transforming her garden into a sanctuary of vibrant colors. She delighted in cooking and baking, ensuring her family was physically and emotionally nourished. Engaging in sports and games with her loved ones brought smiles and laughter, creating cherished memories that will be treasured for generations to come.

As we mourn this remarkable woman’s loss, we honor her life and legacy. Kitty’s memory will forever be etched in our hearts and minds, reminding us to embrace the power of love, kindness, and selflessness. In a world that often seeks to overshadow the beauty of simple acts, Kitty’s gentle spirit will continue to shine brightly, guiding us toward compassion and understanding.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on October 13, 2023, at the Wallace Baptist Church, with burial to follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Prior to the service, a visitation will take place at the Rose-Neath Funeral Home on October 12, 2023, in Mansfield LA., from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. In the spirit of Miss Kitty’s southern hospitality, food will be served.
