Visitation for Gayland Kent Wood is scheduled at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers with a celebration of his 72 years of life to follow at 11:00 AM in the chapel. Graveside service will be at 2:00 PM on that afternoon, at Lamesa Memorial Cemetery. He died on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Gayland Kent Wood was born August 18, 1950, to J.M. “Jack” and Vermell (Black) Wood in Tahoka, TX. He lived in O’Donnell Texas until he graduated high school. During these years he enjoyed many good times participating in stock shows and other 4-H projects. He played baseball, which he especially loved, and enjoyed life on the farm. Kent attended church in O’Donnell with his family and became a Christian at the age of 12. After graduating high school, he attended Howard County Junior College and Tarleton State University. He joined the army reserves in 1970 and served for six years. He married Dedra Carter, his wife of 52 years, on July 2, 1971. His treasured daughter Angie was born in 1976. He worked in the agricultural field his entire career until retiring from USDA-ARS as the farm manager in 2016. Throughout his life he spent his time with family and friends. He devoted his time and energy meeting his family’s needs as they were always his top priority. He was a constant and loving advocate for his daughter. He and his family attended Bacon Heights Baptist Church, where he was active until his illness, in Special Friends and other ministries. Kent was a well-rounded individual, even tempered, gentle and kind. He loved to laugh and have a good time. He was a good and loyal friend.
Kent is survived by his wife; Dedra Wood; daughter, Angie Wood; siblings, Marcheta Gabriel and husband Max, Ronnie Wood and wife Diane, LaNita Richmond and husband Jule; Billy Jack Wood, Kevin Wood, and Charmi Wood; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, J.M. “Jack” and Vermell Wood; sister in law, Sharron Wood; a nephew, Kyle Gabriel, and infant twin nephews. He was also preceded in death by Angie’s boyfriend, Mike Oman, who was a very special part of their family.
