On May 9, 1960, Kelly Ray McDaniel was born to Charles Leonard and Anna Fred (Layer) McDaniel in Lubbock, TX. Kelly started working in the Materials Management department at St. Mary’s Hospital at age 18. He obtained a master’s degree in health administration from Wayland Baptist University. He worked his way up to Director of Materials Management and ultimately to Vice President of Support Services for Covenant Health System until he retired in May of 2022 after 44 years of service to the hospital system.
Kelly found and married his best friend and love of his life Mika on May 30th, 1981. He and Mika had three children, Ashly, Austin, and Aryn. Kelly and Mika had six grandchildren, Beckett, Bowen, Carter, Cooper, Annastyn, and Gensyn. Kelly LOVED his family. He LOVED his wife, greatly! Kelly was the anchor in every role he played, but most importantly he was the spiritual leader and guide for all of his family.
Kelly LOVED to travel. He loved history, studying, and visiting historic destinations, but he also loved all the natural beauty that God gifted us in this world and visiting far-out destinations with his family. He had traveled to six of the seven continents, most of which were with his wife or other immediate families. His retirement gift for Mika and himself was a three-week African safari trip that they just returned from in July. He instilled this love for travel into his family, who will carry that desire with them forever.
He will be remembered for the passion and dedication he put into his family, his career, his church, and his friends and the legacy that awarded him. Kelly never wanted any eyes on himself. He always put himself last. He did not like being rewarded; he just wanted to do what he knew in his heart was right regardless of if anyone was watching. He didn’t stop with just wanting to make the world a better place. He wanted to make people smile, make people happy, to pour into everyone he met, but more than anyone else, he accomplished these with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Mika McDaniel; children, Ashly Moncrief; Austin McDaniel and wife Allison, and Aryn Diaz and husband Gabriel; grandchildren, Beckett and Bowen Moncrief, Carter and Cooper McDaniel and Annastyn and Gensyn Diaz; brother, Danny McDaniel and wife Shari; niece, Lezli McDaniel, and nephew, Rogan McDaniel.
