It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kelly Ann Blalack, who left us on April 4, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on September 11, 1954, in Austin, Texas. Kelly brightened the lives of everyone around her and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Kelly was a proud graduate of A.N. McCallum High School in Austin, Texas before making her way to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech University. It was during her time at Tech that she met Bruce, her loving husband, during a physics class. They tied the knot on January 8, 1977, in Austin, Texas, beginning a beautiful life together. Kelly later transferred to the University of Texas Nursing School in Houston, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Following graduation she began her nursing career at a hospital in Houston. Kelly and Bruce left Houston and returned to Lubbock to make their home. Kelly went to work at St. Mary’s Hospital where she made a lasting impact caring for patients. She later worked for Dr. Wilson and then Dr. Patrick Reeves at the Wilson Surgicenter. Kelly retired from nursing practice in 2010.
Kelly was a lover of the outdoors and had a deep passion for animals. She cherished her time spent with her beloved pets—her cats Maddie and Socks—and had a special affinity for horses and rodeos. Kelly’s warm spirit and kindness touched everyone she met.
She leaves behind her devoted husband, Dwayne Bruce Blalack, and their two sons, Patrick Alden Blalack and Jonathan William Blalack. She is also survived by her sisters, Dana Leidig and husband Mark and Vicki Covert Buchanan.
Kelly was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Covert, Jr. and Bobby Fritts Covert, and a stepbrother, Daniel D. Smith III.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Samaritan’s Purse at www.samaritanspurse.org in Kelly’s memory.
