James David Hansen, fondly known as Jim, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and devotion to his family and community. Born on July 6, 1955, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Jim spent his formative years in Midland, Texas, where he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1973. His passion for the arts blossomed early, as he performed in numerous plays with the Pickwick Players at the Midland Community Theatre, showcasing his natural charisma and talent.
After high school, Jim attended Texas Tech University, earning a degree in Telecommunications in 1977. His time at Texas Tech solidified his lifelong loyalty to the Red Raiders. He could often be found cheering on his team with his beloved wife, Dixie, and their daughter, creating cherished family memories. Beyond football, Jim found joy on the golf course, sharing laughter and camaraderie with family and friends.
Jim’s professional journey began in the newsroom, where he excelled as an investigative journalist, earning recognition for his dedication and skill. It was during this time at KCBD that he met Dixie, a news producer who caught his eye. Jim’s creative excuses to strike up conversations with Dixie quickly turned into a love story. The two married on June 1, 1986, embarking on a partnership that spanned 38 years, raising their children, Matthew and Elizabeth, and building a life filled with love and shared adventures.
In 1990, Jim embarked on a new chapter of service, becoming the longest-serving judge in Lubbock County’s history. Known for his fairness, integrity, and dedication, he presided over nearly 200,000 cases during his tenure. His impact reached far beyond the courtroom; he was a mentor to countless fellow justices, managing online message boards to share wisdom and support. Honored as Texas Judge of the Year in 2007, Jim’s tireless efforts to improve the judicial system left an indelible mark.
Faith was the cornerstone of Jim’s life, guiding his decisions and interactions. His love for Jesus was evident in his generosity, compassion, and commitment to those around him. Whether serving his community or offering a kind word to a stranger, Jim embodied the values of his faith.
Jim is survived by his wife, Dixie; his children, Matt Hansen (Ryan) and Elizabeth Hansen; and his sisters, Jo Lynda Wresche and Elizabeth Hansen Green. His legacy is carried forward by many more dear family members, friends, and the community he so faithfully served.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Shirley Hansen, whose love and guidance shaped the remarkable man Jim became.
