He married Gail Gibson McIntosh on March 16, 1991, in Lubbock. John “Dub” was raised in Odessa where he was a huge basketball star while being coached by his father John Malaise Sr. John “Dub” played basketball for Texas Tech from 1964-1966. He was a two time Associated Press honorable mention All-America selection; he was a three-time All-Southwest Conference first-team honoree and was tabbed the SWC Player of the Year, as a junior, after averaging 23.8 points a game. He was inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame in 2014. He was later enshrined in the Texas Tech Ring of Honor in 2019 as part of the inaugural induction class representing the top men’s basketball athletes in program history. After college, he went into the life insurance business, owning his own company, Dub Malaise & Associates. He received several top salesman awards in his career. He also had his Real Estate license. In his spare time, he enjoyed golf, where he was a scratch golfer.Survivors include his wife, Gail Malaise; their children; Todd (Jade) Malaise, of San Antonio, Resa (Brian) Rottino, Christopher McIntosh; grandchildren, Reid Rottino, Rachel Rottino, Will Rottino, Anna Rottino, Kaitlyn Tucker, Ty Tucker, Christopher McIntosh; siblings, Dan Malaise; Liddie Malaise.He was preceded in death by his father, John Malaise, Sr. and mother, Betty Malaise.
