Dr. Joe Holbert Mayes was born on August 19, 1944 to Billy Woods Mayes and Anna Faye Mayes at Florence Nightingale Hospital (now Baylor) in Dallas, TX. Raised in Crane Texas with his brother, Billy Woods Mayes II. Dr. Mayes graduated Crane High School in 1962. He graduated Texas Tech in 1970, after time in the US Army; he then received his DDS at Baylor College of Dentistry in 1974 and his MSD in Orthodontics in 1977.Dr. Mayes practiced orthodontics in Lubbock, Texas, for 40 years. He was an adjunct professor for Baylor College of Dentistry for orthodontic students. During that time, he also shared over 200 lectures around the world on topics of new treatments and appliances that he developed. He lived life to the fullest, and did not wait until he retired to enjoy all the opportunities available to him.He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Lee Mayes, children Joe Mayes II, Stephanie Prentice, Anthony Jones, along with seven grandchildren.

Cheryl and family, I only knew Joe for a short time but I know he is a great man and enjoyed the many trips you and Joe made. Joe and I shared a common interest in the food aspect of your trips. We also shared a love of Tommy Bahama wear. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations and Joe was always positive in every conservation. He believed in living life to the fullest. Joe was always planning a trip with you and I know he enjoyed every trip you made together. He will be missed greatly. Phyllis and I send our prayers and you are in our thoughts.

To Joe and family, My condolences in Joe's passing! He has left his pains down here and is in a better place now watching over all of us! My fond memories of Joe were working on his special collection of cars and conversing over them all and nothing at all! We had many phone conversations, most including cars of course, but my favorite one was "hey Scotty can you go pick up my COBRA? Its stuck in a tree on 1585!" So here is to you Joe! You helped my life in many ways and you shall be remembered as a good friend!

My life was made better because of Joe. My friend for decades. The memories are many and I will forever keep Joe in my heart. A very good man. May God hold him tight and bring peace to Cheryl. I was lucky and blessed to have Joe in my life. Don Grimes.

Dear Mayes Family, I am Karen Johnson and I recently learned about Joe from Stephanie. Your family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers. I am praying that you all find comfort in knowing that Joe is healed and is very happy where he is. Also know that too he is your Guardian Angel and will carry all your love with him.
