James Raymond Cone, Jr. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, at Covenant Hospital. Jim will be fondly remembered for his quiet nature, character, and generosity.
Jim was born on November 8, 1943, in Vernon, TX. He was the second child of Raymond Cone and Dorothy Cone. He married Jane Kelsey 53 years ago on March 25, 1972, at First Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX.
He is survived by sons, Jim Cone, III and wife Kim, and Caleb Cone and wife Shawna; and grandchildren, James “Quatro” Cone, IV, Rix Cone, Mary Elizabeth Cone, Thomas Cone, and Grace Cone.
Jim grew up in Lubbock, where he attended Lubbock High School. He then attended Texas Christian University and St. Mary’s Law School. After graduation, he worked in oil and gas as well as the grain business. He served on the Lubbock International Airport Board and enjoyed handing out programs for the early service at First Baptist Church. Jim had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying, and sailing with his family and friends.
