James Prieto, 66, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on July 2, 2024. James was born Gonzalo Garcia Jr. to Gonzalo Garcia and Andrea Herrera on November 19, 1957, in Lubbock, TX. He was later adopted by Jose Prieto and given the name James Prieto. He married Maria Cecilia Martinez on August 10, 1974. Together they had four daughters; Maria Valentina Christophe (Andrew), Stephanie Prieto, Jennifer Prieto and June Prieto; they also raised a foster son, James Gamboa, together. The couple remarried entering a Sacramental marriage on December 20, 1991, at St. Joseph Catholic Church where James was a third-generation parishioner. He was given the gift of his Catholic Christian identity and faith from his beloved “Mamita” Reyes Hererra; a legacy that has been passed to future generations. He married Guadalupe Ursua on February 20, 2014.
James was very much the life of the party. He never met a stranger that did not part as a friend. When it came to his friendships, he was very loyal and revered. Those he chose as extended family, he loved unconditionally and fervently. He was a self-made, generous man who chose to see the good in everyone.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, daughter, Laurie Martinez; stepsons, Baldemar and Simon Quinones. all of Lubbock, stepdaughter Benita; 21 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, siblings: Rick Prieto (Alejandra), Luis Prieto, Herlinda Prieto all of Lubbock, Zenaida Prieto Mendez (Carlos), of Euless, Frank Garcia, Graciela Sanchez, Elva Martinez, Maria Ramirez of Rio Grande Valle (RGV), Valentina Loa (Che) of Weatherford, Raul Garcia of San Antonio; stepmother, Ramona Garcia of RGV. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Preceded in death by his beloved grandmother “Mamita”, parents, wife, Lupe, siblings: Selestino Soto (Ramona-living), Alicia Perez Prieto, Beneficia Prieto, Guadalupe Aguayo, and Jesse Garcia.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Sally Cantu for her constant love, care, and companionship to our dad. We are truly grateful.
A Catholic Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Saturday, July 6, 2024, at San Ramon Catholic Church officiated by Reverand Martin Pina. Burial will immediately follow at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park. Pallbearers include his grandsons: James Christophe, Miguel “MJ” Alfaro, Zayden “Coy” Martinez, Deiari Pollard, Simon J. Quinones, Nikolas Quinones. Honorary Pallbearers: Matthew Garcia, Brandon Cabrales, Cartier Bledsoe and Jesus Mata.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to San Ramon Catholic Church for the new parish hall/Family Life Center.
