He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club of Shallowater, the VFW and the Eagles Lodge in Lubbock, TX. As a member of the Lions Club of Shallowater, he assisted in fund raisers that gave back to the community and aided children with new glasses. He delivered food baskets and candy on Christmas morning to families in need. For several years he helped with one of the Lions’ biggest fund raisers by cooking brisket for the Lions Club Luncheon. J. W. also helped the VFW with several fund raisers and with building supplies for their new building. He helped start and fund the building for the Eagles Lodge in Lubbock, TX, establishing the Fraternal Order of Eagles South Plains Aerie 4271. With the aid of many friends in the construction business, he enlisted them to donate thousands of dollars in materials to help erect the new facility.
James was married to Mary Vivial Hamersley, and was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Jean Hamersley.
He is survived by a son, Mike Hamersley and wife,Tammy Hamersley of Shallowater; two daughters, Denise Hamersley of Shallowater; Sandra Halimeh and husband, Roy Halimeh of Lubbock; three brothers, Doyle Hamersley of Oklahoma; Jackie Hamersley of Crosbyton; and Tommy Hamersley; three grandchildren, Casie Muller and husband, Bryce Muller of Shallowater; Cory Hamersley of Odessa, TX; Nidal Halimeh and wife, Lexi of Lubbock,TX; two great-grandchildren, Kaedyn and Avery Muller.
He is also survived by four step children, Phillip Vivial and wife, Amanda; Karla Vivial Thomas and husband, Jeff; Monica Maeker and husband, Andy; Paul McArthur and wife, Andrea; eighteen step grandchildren, Colton Duncan, Jake, Ryan and Luke Vivial, Laura Maeker, Jenny Maeker Torbot, Kari Maeker, Katie Jackson, Stefanie Thomas, Lindsey Thomas, Ryan McArthur, Landen McArthur, Taylor McArthur, Amanda Simpson and husband, Kevin Simpson, Dan Foerste, Olivia Foerste, Selena Foerste, Gregory Foerste; and one step great grandchild, Quinn Simpson.
