Herbert David Irwin went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 30, 2025, in Lubbock. He was born May 18, 1933, in Floyd County to Felix Clyde Irwin and Lottie Faye Maxey Irwin. He had an identical twin brother, Hershel. Herb graduated from Floydada High School in 1951 and enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and he served 1950-1953. He has always been very proud to be a US Veteran.
Herb began court reporting classes at Lippert Business School in Plainview in 1956. On July 21, 1957, Herb married Sue Durham Irwin at First Baptist Church, Floydada. Upon completion of court reporting school, they moved to Birmingham, AL where Herb worked as a court reporter for 3-1/2 years in a criminal court.
Herb and Sue returned to Lubbock in 1961 and he purchased OK Tire Store which he managed for several years. Then, he began work for McWhorter Tire Company in 1977. He retired from McWhorter’s in 1999 as Service Manager. He later began working on a part-time basis in 2001 at Around The Clock Storage until 2021.
Herb and Sue have been faithful and active members of Southcrest Baptist Church during all of their years in Lubbock. Herb served at Southcrest as Sunday School Director, Deacon, Sunday School teacher, as well as a number of other leadership positions.
Herb is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Sue Irwin; two children – Mac (Jana) Irwin, and Robert (Suzy) Irwin; five grandchildren – Conor (Kalyn) Irwin, Caroline (Hunter) McAnally, Katy Beth (Ryan) McGahey, Cole Irwin, and Natalie (Bryan) Waters; great-grandchildren – Grayson David Irwin, Reese Abigail McAnally, Elliot May Irwin, Blakely Kay McAnally, and coming soon, Campbell James Irwin; and a large number of extended family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Lottie Irwin; infant daughter, Susan Michelle Irwin; siblings, Randall Irwin, Shirley Irwin, Lofflin Irwin, Leola Irwin, Sherman Irwin, Hershel Irwin, and Luella Slack.
