“Helen Bates Nelson – 95, of Lubbock, got her promotion to Heaven on March 14, 2016. She was born July 30, 1920 in Tulia, Texas, to Harley Bates and Lela Cotten Bates. Helen graduated from Tulia High School in 1938. She married W. Glen Nelson in 1939. They moved to Hereford in 1950 where Helen resided until 2004. She moved to Lamesa, to live with her oldest son and daughter in-law, then to Lubbock with them in 2008.
Helen loved to read, sew and make crafts. She was an avid follower of politics and loved to discuss it with anyone who would listen. She was very proud to have met and endorse Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy, when they came to Lubbock.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Glen, in 2000 and brothers, Elwood and Jack Bates
She is survived by sons Bill Nelson (Anne), of Lubbock, Olen Nelson(Connie) of Los Angeles, grandchildren Michael Nelson (Susan) of Katy, Tx, Greg Nelson (Naama) of Los Angeles, Melissa Greenberg (Dave) of San Anselmo, CA. and great-grandchildren, William, Matthew, and Lena Nelson, Adelle and Lucas Greenberg.”
