Gilbert W. “Gil” Mauldin passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2017.
Gil was born on February 11, 1930, to Oran and Laveda Mauldin at Pettit, TX. He graduated from Lubbock High School and went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. He joined the US Air Force in Oct., 1950, during the Korean War. He participated in nuclear testing at the Atomic Energy Commission Nevada Proving Grounds. He was assigned to the 4925th Test Group at Kirkland AFB, NM, as a B-50 bomber mechanic. Following his discharge from the military in 1954, he went back to work for Southwestern Bell and attended Texas Tech University in the evening. On August 7, 1953, he married Betty Mallman in Lubbock. Gil worked for Southwestern Bell as a Systems Technician, retiring from AT&T in 1988. In 1998, Gil and Betty moved to Pendaries Village, Rociada, NM, a golfing community. He enjoyed playing golf at least three times a week and was a founding member of the Rociada Baptist Church. He and Betty enjoyed traveling across the United States with friends, Dewey and Coleen Rothwell and Johnnie and Wes Durant. Betty died on October 22, 2004. After that Gil spent his winters in Lubbock and summers in Pendaries. While in Lubbock he attended and was a member of the Downtown Bible Class.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Mauldin; two brothers, Oscar “Chuck” Mauldin, and Robert Oran Mauldin; and two sisters, Mary Frances Lawler, and Ruby Louise Moore.
Gil is survived by his five children, Ray Hannah of Albuquerque, NM, Donna Jolly, Sandra Mauldin and Rea Johnston, John Mauldin all of Lubbock; Steve Mauldin and wife Kim of Canadian, TX; four grandchildren, Chad Stuckwish, Shane Stuckwish and wife Julie, Dr. Matt Mauldin and wife Aggi, Kristin Mauldin and fiancé Jason Bell; four great-grandsons, Kaden, Kaleb, Jase and Cole Stuckwish, and two sisters, Dorothy Janet Ross, and Joyce Ann Sharp.
