George Mullen

Reverend George Wayne Mullen age 89 of Lubbock, Texas passed from this life on June 30, 2025.

Reverend George was born in Ottumwa, Iowa to the late George Patrick and Winnie Olive Mullen on July 30, 1935. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Arlene Mullen, of 67 years and two children Dawn Gaines of Lubbock, TX, Curtis Mullen of Paauilo, Hawaii, Helen Cole (sister) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mildred Higdon (Aunt) of Kingwood, TX, as well as six grandchildren Julianne Wright, Joshua Mullen, Kayla VanAusdal, Janna Sosa, Justin Mullen, and Mikkal Mullen, plus nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, George Patrick Mullen; Mother, Winnie Olive; Sister, Irene Livesay; Sister, Carolyn Mullen, and Brother, Andrew Mullen.

George was a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ and a devoted husband and father. He loved people and was a great example to all that knew him, His family reflect his influence in carrying out his attributes of love, joy, encourager, kind, fun and love for Jesus Christ. He was a gentle and kind man who cared deeply for others.

George graduated from Ottumwa High School in Ottumwa, Iowa in 1953; he attended Central Bible College in Springfield, MO one year and then transferred to North Central Bible College. He was ordained at the Iowa District Assemblies of God in 1963. For fifty-seven years George faithfully served in ministry. He pastored First Assembly of God in Iowa City, IA for 45 years, retiring in 2005. George loved the ministry and loved to share Jesus Christ with people. Seeing someone come to know Christ as their personal Savior was the greatest thrill of all. He always wanted to encourage and lift up everyone he met. Lives changed and seeing them serving the Lord was a trill and a privilege. God gave Pastor George and Janice many wonderful, fulfilling and blessed years at First Assembly.

He served Section 7 of Iowa as Christ Ambassadors Rep (Youth Rep) for eleven years and as Vice D-CAP (District Christ Ambassadors President) for six years. He was Acting D-CAP for six months, served Section 7 in Iowa as Presbyter for six years and then was Iowa Chi-Alpha (college) Director for a time. George and Janice were a team and counseled many years at youth camps.

After retiring from Iowa City First Assembly of God, George and Janice moved to Albemarle, NC in 2006 and un-retired to become the Senior Associate Pastors there in February of 2007. George was a hospital and visitation Chaplain. He and Janice were leaders of the Seniors Group. He retired for the ministry a second time in December of 2018.

For fun George and the family liked to garden, play golf, ride bicycles, play basketball at the University of Iowa Field House, ice skate, play table games, boating, renting a pontoon, play Scrabble, and traveling.

In 2018 they moved to Lubbock, TX to be close to family; and their church, First Assembly of God, asked them to lead the seniors (West of 50s).

What a privilege to have God bless His children with so many great adventures. His faithful love endures. George had a blessed and fulfilled life. His life has reached many people with sound counseling, prayer, love and interest in them, teaching, taking time for everyone. He is loved!

He fought a good fight and finished the course… he lived with hope of Jesus soon return.

George’s family thanks the wonderful Hospice of Lubbock Team for the expert, wonderful, loving care they gave George. He loved to smile and laugh with them. They are Taylor, his nurse; Lacy, his Social Worker; Amber, his Nurse Practitioner; Cheyenne who sang to him each month; and to Chaplin Randall. They became part of our family.
