Our beloved, Fidel Delao Oyerbides, passed away on November 23, 2022, at his home in Lubbock at the age of 87.
Fidel was born in Colorado City, Texas, and grew up in Monahans and the surrounding area. A life-long Texan, Fidel left the state only as part of his 23-year service to his country in the United States Air Force. It was in the Air Force that he met his wife, Kathleen. Together they shared a journey until she died in 2006. He was fond of telling stories of both the happy and the hard times they encountered together as they raised their family. He was a hardworking father, yet he made time for his family, coached his children’s teams, and enjoyed their lives as well as his own.
Fidel had a great passion for football. His one sure purchase every year was Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine. He loved the Monahans Lobos, traveling to their games or listening on his old shortwave radio when the travel became difficult. He supported the University of Texas Longhorns, the Dallas Cowboys, and, more recently, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
He is survived by his three children; daughters, Teresa Moreno and Laura Hughes; and his son, John Oyerbides; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Graveside services for Fidel will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, December 2, 2022, at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park.
