Ernest Gustav (E.G.) Wickstrom, or as his friends called him, Wick, departed from our world Monday, June 20, 2016. Born June 12, 1920, Wick just celebrated his 96th birthday in style…sharing Navy tales and eating strawberry shortcake with family. As he often said, he was a New Yorker by birth but a Texan by choice, loving the “South 30” as he fondly called his little spread. Wick was born on Staten Island, New York to parents that immigrated through Ellis Island. Mom, Maria Ann Fortunato DeQuattro, came from Sicily and Dad, Julius Gustav Wickstrom, from Sweden. He proudly enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 19 and served in World War II and the Korean War where he was awarded 12 military medals. He was a member of the rifle and pistol teams, and he retired from the Navy in 1959. Wick’s second career was with Continental Insurance as a Safety Engineer from 1960-1982. He was a member of the Society of Safety Engineers and the Cessna Pilots Association. Wick married Verlie Bumpass on January 1, 1946. Infant son, Tommy Glenn, died in 1954. He is survived by daughter Joy Daniel, son-in-law Brant Daniel, grandson Nicholas Daniel and wife Kendall, and granddaughter Alexa Daniel. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Alfred Wickstrom and Orville Wickstrom and sister Doris Cappelli. We will celebrate a life well-lived with a visitation Thursday, June 23rd from 5:00pm-6:30pm at Lake Ridge Chapel, 82nd and Iola. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 24th at 10:00am in the City of Lubbock Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, consider memorial donations to the Wounded Warrior Project or Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.
