Kay was born on September 11, 1947, to Harry and Lavonia Nelson in Odessa, Texas. Her arrival was unique—she was born in a motel room as her family was returning home from Alaska. Due to her father’s work as a contractor, she spent much of her childhood moving between Texas and Colorado. She graduated from Caprock High School in Amarillo, Texas.
During the Christmas season following her graduation, Kay met the love of her life, Virgil Frick, at her uncle’s house. Their courtship was brief, lasting only six months before they married on June 30, 1966, in Amarillo. Just one week after their wedding, Virgil, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force, received orders to report for training at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. Soon after, he was deployed to Vietnam, leaving his new bride behind.
Upon Virgil’s return, the couple settled in Amarillo for six years before moving to Panhandle, Texas, in 1974, where they built their lives together while raising their two children and three grandchildren. Kay dedicated 30 years to Panhandle ISD and was deeply involved with the Panhandle Church of Christ, where her faith and service touched many lives.
In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Kay had a heart for children in need. She opened her home and heart as a foster mother to several babies, providing them with love and care during their earliest days.
In 2011, Kay and Virgil moved to Lubbock, Texas, to be closer to family, where they remained until her passing.
Kay is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Virgil Frick; her son, Glen Frick (Kimberly); her beloved grandchildren, Brennan Frick (Jordan), Tyler Frick (Brianna), Wesley Frick (fiancé Chris Albert), Hayden Frick, Lindsey Frick (fiancé Clayton Echols), and Ally Frick; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Gavin, Isaac, Jack, Kayleb, Kloee, Hudson, Prestyn, and Lachlan Frick. She is also survived by her sister, Karen Buchanan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Lavonia Nelson, and her daughter, Virginia Frick.
Kay’s life was defined by love, faith, and selfless service to her family, church, and community. She will be dearly missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who knew her.
