Dr. Mann was a beloved teacher, mentor and friend. He was more than an exceptional educator - he was a guiding light who touched the lives of countless students with his wisdom, kindness and unwavering support. Dr. Mann always took the time to know each of us - not just as students, but as people. Whether it was a question about coursework or a conversation about life his door was always open, and his heart was always generous. Thank you, Dr. Mann, for everything. Your legacy lives on in all of us. I will forever remember all our lunches together, the laughter, the conversations, and time with someone who truly cared. Thanks for always sharing your sandwich and your time. Long Live the Matador!

I took Dr. Mann's class in the fall of 2012. He was Socratic with a heavy dose of humor and storytelling. He’d break up lessons on deferred tax assets with stories about ‘McGillicuddy’—sometimes relevant, often hilarious, and always unforgettable. He truly enjoyed being in front of the class - Nearly 70, he had more energy than anyone in the room. He took me out to lunch that semester, an offer he made to every student in his class, his way of personalizing the teaching experience. I don’t remember what we talked about, but I deeply remember how I felt afterwards: hopeful. I was about to graduate, no job yet, getting nervous, confidence waning. Dr. Mann saw something in me and he told me so. At graduation, he gave me a big hug and said he was proud of me. He genuinely cared, because that’s the man he was. 3 years later - I was considering an MBA, I reached out for his advice. His take was insightful: - "…it will not be because of the educational training that he or she received on how to be a manager; rather, it would be because that individual has the God-given personality, drive, and interpersonal skills to be a successful leader." - “Right now time is on your side. It may not be so in a few years.” - “If possible, I had rather see you attend one of the Ivy League schools, Stanford, Northwestern, or Virginia.” In 2018, after getting into Kellogg, I called Dr. Mann. He was thrilled - the joy in his voice was palpable. This was the last time I would ever hear his voice. I last connected with Dr. Mann in 2022. I was sitting outside 200 Clarendon on a hot August day next to Copley Square in Back Bay in Boston. I had just finished my onsite interview at Charlesbank. It went well, I was feeling grateful, and I thought of Dr. Mann. I sent him a Facebook Message while waiting for an Uber under the towering Boston skyscraper, thanking him for helping me believe in myself. His response: - "I am so proud FOR you. I was already proud OF you - for being the kind of person you were and are. You were a real asset to my class. I wish you the very best" Thank you Dr. Mann - I just wish I could have one last phone call to thank you.

Hello Dr. Mann's Family: I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of our dear Dr. Mann. I had just talked with Dr. Mann about a month prior to his death and he was so very cheerful. I had the unique opportunity to be both a student of Dr. Mann (in 1991) as part of the TTU PhD program in accounting, and also later join the faculty in 2013 to be a faculty colleague of Dr. Mann. Dr. Mann was always cheerful and uplifting, and was a distinct encouragement to me both when he was my professor as well as later when we were faculty colleagues together. I can still hear is his cheerful and encouraging voice ring out whenever we would meet at the elevator to go to class or some other event. I cherish my memories of Dr. Mann and I find comfort, and I hope the family does also, with the knowledge that Dr. Mann is now in Heaven. May he indeed rest in peace in the arms of the Savior.

Herschel was very kind to my parents Bob and Sue Johnson. After Dad died, Herschel would always make sure to ask Mom how she was doing. He was a good man. Our condolences to Marcelle.

My Condolences to Dr Mann’s family. I was a student of Dr Mann in 2007 at Texas Tech. He was not only an incredible professor but he was a mentor. He took the time to give me life advice and was such a genuine man. He always took the time to mentor students during his office hours. I will miss him.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Dear Marcelle, it is with deep sorrow that I learned of Herschel’s passing today. Patty and I want to extend our heartfelt condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. Herschel was a dear friend during my time serving on the MicroMash and ThomsonReuters advisory boards. As the newest member of that board, Herschel took the time to make me feel welcome and encouraged me to be an active participant. I will always be grateful for his tutoring and friendship. Please know that you are in my mind, and I hope you find comfort in the love and support of those around you.

Herschel was my first mentor when I started as an Assistant Professor at Texas Tech. He cared so much about his students. His advice to me was that he was developing students into ethical professionals. Accounting just happened to be the subject. I remembered and practiced that advice throughout my career. Thank you Herschel. Rest in peace.

I have fond memories of teaching sections of intermediate accounting II alongside Herschell. He once shared with me how nice it was that I was a hard professor too, because we both had high standards and wanted our students to succeed in their careers, so we were rigorous instructors and didn't "dumb anything down." Students knew they would have to really study if they wanted the pass his class...and their work paid off handsomely because they got the knowledge they needed to pass the CPA exam!

I had the honor of meeting Dr. Mann while working in the President’s Office. He was truly one of the kindest and most genuine people you could ever meet—always greeting others with a warm smile, even when he wasn’t feeling his best. Dr. Mann often spoke about his deep love for the Lord and his passion for teaching, both of which were clearly reflected in the way he lived his life. I had the privilege of seeing him again late last year at the cancer center. Despite waiting for his own lab results, he greeted me with a big smile and told me he would keep my father in his prayers. That moment has stayed with me—it was a powerful example of his selflessness and unwavering compassion. He also frequently spoke with deep love and admiration for his wife and family. It was clear that they were his foundation and greatest source of strength. His dedication to them was just as strong as his commitment to his faith and his students. Dr. Mann was a light to everyone around him, and his presence will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved family during this time.
