I met Dr. Auld back in 1994 or '95 when he had just become the department chairman and I was the University Daily reporter covering the College of Agricultural Sciences. He'd often call me and say, "Charles, I've got a story idea for you," and next thing you know I was doing it and learning a lot in the process. When I needed help finishing my minor in agronomy and was one credit hour short, Dr. Auld made an hour special project for me. When he told me I would be picking cotton, ginning cotton and planting it to see how well it tolerated RoundUp, I was all for it. He also told me to wear gloves when I was picking cotton. I didn't and I understood why later that evening when I couldn't hold a beer because my hands were sliced up. He'd often talk about his trips to DC for various boards and committees he was serving on and now 26 years later, I'm in DC working in the USDA Executive Secretariat processing those same boards and committees. Dr. Auld took care of his people, and I've never forgotten that throughout my career. If you were one of his, he'd go to hell and back for you without hesitation and he put family first and expected you to do the same. The work was important, but family is more important.

I recently learned of Dr. Auld's transition. Dr. Auld was instrumental in accepting me into graduate school in 1998. Everything that has been said already about his devotion to mentoring students I echo. There were three encounters/projects that particularly stand out: 1) gathering graduate students to demolish labs and his "one room at a time" approach to transforming the PSS Department lab and research spaces. He wasn’t going to wait for approvals from facility administrators. He would round us all up, ask us to bring sledge hammers, gloves and goggles, and give us a rendezvous point to start the process...followed by taking us out to dinner. 2) I ran his castor bean project in 2000/2001 while he was on sabbatical leave. Just before leaving town, he handed me a stack of declassified reports on castor and told me to be careful working around the crop (as it is highly toxic!). What was I getting myself into? He gave me lots of flexibility and taught me some mass selection breeding techniques. And we got a paper out of it. 3) I last saw him about 10 years ago and stopped by his office with my then toddler 3 and 4 year old sons. He was more interested in playing with my kids with games / toys he had in his office than talking science. He drove us out to the Lubbock Museum and spent a great deal of time with my kids that day. He was one of the influencers in my decision to go to NMSU for doctoral studies. I’m now a Professor and Research Director in Farmington, NM and continue to work for NMSU. His legacy for me will be student mentoring and having a caring, down-to earth approach to leadership that few can emulate. God Bless, Kevin

We offer our deepest sympathies for the loss of Dick. When I last saw him last we were all cutting tree branches off of the tree next to Rene and Gingers mobile home in Tesuque. He was a very up lifting person and yes cracked a few jokes while we were loading branches on to the trailer. I was very happy to meet and talk with him that day. Rest in peace brother.
