Donald Ray Coggins, born on March 19, 1947, was the second child of Ruby and William Earl Coggins. He is survived by a son, Jeff, brothers William Earl (Bill) Coggins, Jr. (wife Karen) of Phoenix, Arizona, and Dennis A. Coggins (wife Nikki) of Irmo, South Carolina; Nieces Jennifer Coggins and Sara Coggins; Nephews Brandon Coggins (wife Amy) and Colby Coggins (wife Sarah). One great nephew and three great nieces.
Don was born in Rutherfordton, NC and spent his formative years in Lyman, SC. He was a graduate of James F. Byrnes High School (Duncan, SC) and Texas Tech University (Lubbock, TX). Don served 10+ years in the US Air Force before retiring with a medical disability. After leaving the Air Force, he settled in Lubbock where he received a Masters Degree from Texas Tech. Upon graduation, he worked at Texas Tech as a Site License Coordinator in the Technology Support Department. His many years in that department were spent helping students and staff with software installations, and beta testing software programs for the University. Don retired from Tech in 2013.
Don always had a smile on his face exuding a warm, welcoming personality, and a loving heart. He made friends easily. Don was the primary caregiver of his mother in her final years, whom he moved from her home in South Carolina following an accident. Later, when she needed more intensive medical care, he visited her every day. Don’s family will always be eternally grateful for the love, attention and companionship he afforded our Mother. During his many years of life in the Lubbock area, Don made many friends, with whom he would meet regularly for social gatherings, breakfasts, and lunches at their favorite restaurants. He always had a place at the table during Holidays and special occasions with his friends.
He had a love of all things NASCAR, attending many races across the United States over the years with family members. A very memorable trip was to Darlington Racetrack in South Carolina with his brothers Bill and Dennis followed by several days of traveling the Carolinas to explore their family roots.
He passed August 13, 2024 in Wolfforth, Texas, at 77 years old.
