He joined the Marine Corps in March 1952. He married the love of his life, June, on July 15, 1955, in Clovis, NM. Together they raised two children, Janice and Donald. He joined the Lubbock Fire Department in 1960 where he spent many years doing what he loved and climbing the ranks until he retired in 1993. During his retirement, he spent most of his time golfing and being Papa to three girls.Don was a devoted family man and God-fearing Christian. Anyone that knew Don knew he loved his church family from Bethany Baptist Church. Every Sunday, he stood at the door waiting to shake everyone’s hand, pass out a bulletin, and slip a piece of candy to all of the kids. It never was a complete Sunday night unless the evening church service was followed up by dinner at McDonald’s with his family.Don enjoyed meeting up with his retired “fireman buddies” every day at the Red Zone for coffee and long talks. Many times, he’d meet up with his granddaughter, Ashley, at Red Zone for lunch dates. He was well-known to everyone there.Don will be deeply missed by many. His smile and laughter were infectious. He was always the first person to give to someone in need and had the purest of hearts. Without a doubt, he was sure to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”Survivors include his wife, LaWanda June Hunt; son, Donald Hunt; daughter, Janice Neighbors; granddaughters, Ashley Robinson – and Bri Neighbors; great-granddaughter, Taygan Turner; brothers, Harold Hunt and wife Nancy and Leo Hunt and wife Delia; brother-in-law, Dee Martin and wife Jan; family friend, Clinton Gill.He was preceded in death by his parents, J.C.
