Ernest Don Holcomb, known affectionately as Don, passed away on September 15, 2024, at the age of 79, in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas. Born on March 11, 1945, in Lubbock, Don was a cherished member of the community and a loving family man.
Don was profoundly devoted to his family, a beloved husband to Elaine Holcomb for 59 years, and a loving father to their daughter, Wendy Devault. His role as a grandfather, or Bear as Garrett and Avery affectionately referred to him, brought him immense joy, making them the light of his life.
Don’s commitment to his faith was evident through his long-standing memberships at Southcrest Baptist Church and Highland Baptist Church. While at Highland, he generously contributed his time and skills, particularly notable for cooking breakfast for the youth group on Sundays and serving as a cook at summer camps.
His community spirit shone brightly through his involvement with the Lions Club, where he played Santa Claus for many years. Don’s portrayal of Santa Claus brought joy and the magic of Christmas to children’s homes, nursing homes, and various community events. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enjoyment of fishing with his grandchildren, trips to the lake, and the many trips camping with family in Red River, New Mexico and Flagstaff, Arizona.
An avid player of the game 42, Don cherished his Saturdays spent playing with friends, showcasing his competitive yet jovial spirit.
Don is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughter Wendy and her husband Gregg; grandchildren, Garrett and Avery; and his niece, Ginger Holcomb Moore, along with many other beloved relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Velda Holcomb, and his brother, Ronnie Holcomb.
Don Holcomb will be remembered as a man who brought warmth, joy, and kindness to all who knew him.
