Diane Huckaby, 76, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2025 at her home in Lubbock, Texas.
Diane was born on November 30, 1948 in Louisville, Kentucky to William and Lucille Heady. She graduated from Memorial High School in Houston, Texas. Diane continued her studies at Stephen F. Austin State University where she had the honor to be an exchange student and study abroad in Monterrey and Morelia Mexico. It was at Stephen F. Austin where she met the love of her life, Lynn Huckaby.
Lynn and Diane married in January 1971. Lynn’s time in the Air Force had them moving around before finding their first home in Smithville, Texas. It was in Smithville where Lynn would begin his career in retail and Diane found a job at the local newspaper. She wrote obituaries for the paper but ironically, she did not write this obituary. Diane loved a good story and interviewed many people. One interview she was very proud to talk about was with CBS reporter Dan Rather over her backyard fence.
In 1978, Lynn and Diane transferred to San Antonio, Texas, where they would embark on more journeys together and raise their children, Tammy and Chad. Selfless as she was, Diane held many part-time jobs so that she could be 100% available to Tammy and Chad’s sports, activities, and their needs. Later in life Diane would become better known as DeeDee to her four beloved grandchildren. Through the next two decades, DeeDee would be found supporting the grandchildren at 6-man football games, basketball games and traveling to stock shows across Texas. One grandchild said, DeeDee not only goes to my home games but she travels to all the “Away” games too!!
In her spare time, Diane enjoyed painting, quilting, needlepoint, reading and of course all things George Strait. Diane was a member of Southcrest Baptist Church, Order of The Eastern Star, Daughter of the American Revolution and a Red Hatter.
Our family is at peace knowing how much Diane loved the Lord. Diane shared the word of God and witnessed to others by sharing her Cross Penny Ministry. Diane’s favorite scripture was 1 Corinthians 1:18 “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Lynn, daughter Tammy Garrison (Sean), son Chad Huckaby (Paige). Grandchildren: Logan Garrison, Jake Garrison (Frances), Tori Huckaby (fiancé Austin) and Latham Huckaby. Brother: Kevin Heady. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving close friends.
