It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Claudette Culp, age 88, who departed this life on November 30, 2024, peacefully at home with her family in Lubbock, Texas. Born on October 10, 1936, in Alexandria, Louisiana, Claudette moved to Lubbock at the tender age of two, where she would ultimately establish her loving home and cherished legacy.
A proud graduate of Lubbock High School in 1955, Claudette furthered her education at Texas Tech University, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1959. Shortly after, she married L. Wayne Culp on June 17, 1959, embarking on a journey that would see them reside in Dallas while Wayne attended medical school. During this period, Claudette served as a secretary for the Dallas County School Superintendent before they returned to Lubbock in 1965, where Wayne began his medical practice.
Claudette’s life was characterized by a deep commitment to her family, particularly her children, Cindy and Doug, where she gave of her time through PTA and Campfire and Cub Scout leader. and her grandchildren, Kelsey and Tyler. She took immense joy in each moment spent with them, often starting her mornings with exercise, followed by her love for reading, watching game shows, and enjoying sporting events, with a particular fondness for the Miss America pageants. She embraced travel, exploring destinations across the globe, including Mexico City, Paris, Switzerland, Alaska, New England, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.
Her philanthropic spirit was evident through her extensive involvement in various organizations, including her service as past president of the Junior League of Lubbock, Lubbock Symphony Guild, Lubbock, Crosby, Garza Medical Alliance, Sherick Memorial Home Advisory Board, the YWCA and Lubbock Women’s Club. She played pivotal roles in numerous committees and boards, including the YWCA, Methodist Hospital Foundation, Chorus of Angels, United Way, P.E.O. Chapter AA, American Heart and Cancer Associations, Lubbock Arts Festival, , Lubbock Tennis Association, Lubbock Country Club and Texas Tech University Chancellor’s Council just to name a few. Her devotion to First United Methodist Church was marked by her contributions as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher, Chairman for the Commission on Worship, and active participation in various committees.
Claudette received several honors in recognition of her dedicated volunteer work, including the George P. and Mary L. Livermore Award, Altrusa Woman of the Year in 1989, and the Lubbock Tennis Association’s Miriam Philbrick Award.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Wayne Culp, her daughter Cindy Culp, her son Doug Culp and wife Pamra, and her cherished grandchildren, Kelsey Winegarner and husband Ethan and Tyler Culp.
Claudette was preceded in death by her mother, Johnnye Butts, and a brother, J.M. Hill
