Charles Burnett Cole was born March 15, 1934 in Fort Worth Texas to William Burnett Cole and Mary Elsie Cole. His family moved to Tatum, NM in 1936. In 1938 his brother Robert joined the family. Charlie’s family ran a grocery store in Tatum until they moved to Lubbock, Texas before high school. Charles joined the Marine Corp at 17 years old and obtained a GED while enlisted. He served in the Marines from 1951 to 1954 and quickly rose to the rank of Sargent. Upon returning home, he took advantage of the GI bill and earned a degree in accounting from Texas Tech. He started his accounting career in Houston, TX, and shortly thereafter became a CPA. He moved back to Lubbock in 1959 to help his parents build their home. It was then that he started dating Beverly Shoemaker and in 1961 they married. They had three children, Stephen, Kathryn, and Daron, and attended Second Baptist Church. He was very proud that in the following years all three children graduated from his alma mater Texas Tech. He continued in public accounting and later ventured out and started his accounting firm. Charles was a member of the Lubbock Rotary Club and was involved with several charities. He was an avid handball player winning many tournaments and earning the nickname “slop shot Charlie”. He played for many years and developed lifelong friends.
Charles is survived by his wife, Beverly Cole; their children, Stephen Cole, Kathryn Cole, and Daron and wife Elisabeth Cole; grandsons, Kenneth and wife Amy Cole, Ryan Cole, and Martin Cole; and a brother, Robert, and wife Marie Cole. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Nikolas Cole.
