Betty Ann Burch Marricle passed from this earth on September 10, 2024, after a lengthy illness. She was 90 years old.
She was born in Oklahoma to Willie and Louise Burch and older sister Dorothy on August 27, 1934.
Betty met her future husband Dayton William (Bill, Billy, or Doc) Marricle in the summer of 1950 in Lubbock, TX at the soda fountain where she worked. Doc often said that the moment he laid eyes upon her, he fell in love. They were married on March 30, 1951, in Clovis, NM. Within their first year of marriage, they welcomed a daughter Jerry (Jeri) Lynn. Two years later they welcomed a daughter, Donna Jill (Jill).
Betty was an avid gardener and she enjoyed making her girls’ dresses. She was a homemaker. In 1966 Betty attended Beauty School and obtained her Cosmetology license.
The bustling family welcomed a son, Will, in 1968.
Tragedy struck the family in December of 1973 when Jeri unexpectedly passed away and then again when Jill unexpectedly passed away in January of 1975.
Doc, Betty, and Will became members of Forest Heights UMC in 1975. They were active members and enjoyed being a part of all aspects of church life. In 2007, grandson James found his uncle Will through adoption.com. James had been given up for adoption in September of 1973 by Jeri. Doc, Betty, and the entire Marricle family welcomed him with open arms. James and his wife Laura have two sons, Diego and Laurence (Ren). Those boys were the apple of “GG”, Betty’s eye.
She was a strong independent woman that was ahead of her time. She had a strong bond in her Christian faith. She was full of knowledge about plants and was a certified Texas Master Gardener. She volunteered at the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum and was a member of a group called The Wednesday Wonders.
Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with family and friends, gardening, and a bowl of pinto beans or black-eyed peas, along with some homemade cornbread. A strawberry milkshake held a special place in her heart as well. Betty’s backyard was a respite. She found peace and harmony within it.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Doc, in November of 2013. They had been married for 62 years.
Those left to mourn her loss are; son Will and husband Tony of Lubbock; grandson James and wife Laura and their kids Diego and Ren of Tacoma, WA. Many nephews and nieces and many dear friends, and her church family at Forest Heights and her Lubbock Memorial Arboretum family.
In lieu of flowers ,the family requests donations be made to the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum or Lubbock Meals on Wheels.
Her love was strong, her faith never broken, and we are all better people for having known and loved her.
