Bernita Hughes

The family of Bernita Hughes will celebrate her life with a private memorial at 11:00 am Monday, December 21, 2020, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. The service will be live-streamed on this page for those who are unable to attend. All are welcome at the graveside service at Afton Cemetery Monday, December 21, 2020, at 2:00 pm.Bernita was born June 22, 1927,  in Old Glory, Texas. She was the youngest of 14 children.  She married David W Hughes on August 5, 1951. Bernita lived most of her life in Lubbock.  She worked for Furr’s Inc for 21 years until retirement. She was a member of the Baptist church, where she also worked in the nursery. She spent many years volunteering at local hospitals. One of Bernita’s favorite past times was playing card and board games with friends and family; she typically won in most cases.Bernita Hughes passed away peacefully at home on December 17, 2020, at 93 in Lubbock, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband David W. Hughes, her sons Doug (Jean) Brooks, Mike Hughes, Bill Hughes, and her Grandson Brian Hunton.She is survived by her daughters Carol (Ron) Weidmann, Luann (Jeff) Stone, and Janet (Paul) Hunton; she has 11 Grandchildren, 15 Great-grandchildren, and four Great-great-grandchildren.
