Avilene Spencer Kirk, affectionately known as MeMa or MeMaw, was born October 29, 1928 in Spur, Texas, the eldest of five children born to Alvin and Cora Spencer. She went home to be with the Lord on May 2, 2019 at the age of 90. She passed peacefully in the home of her eldest son where she had resided the past 7 years of her life. A time of fellowship and remembrance is scheduled from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life of 90 years at 10 am on Monday, May 6, 2019, at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers.She graduated from Littlefield High School in 1946 and married Oren Alvin Kirk, Jr. on July 10, 1948 in Littlefield where they resided until moving to Lubbock in the summer of 1965. She worked for Pioneer Natural Gas in Littlefield and continued working there after moving to Lubbock. In August of 1970 she began working for LISD at Roscoe Wilson Elementary where she was a librarian, lunch room “lady”, teacher’s aide, and office secretary before moving to Central Office where she worked in the Central Food office. She was a lifetime member of the PTA. She retired in May 1990 after serving LISD for 21 years to enjoy life and family. She and her husband Oren were avid bowlers, bowling in numerous leagues before becoming involved with square dancing. They were charter members of the Merry Mixers Square Dance Club and served in numerous local and state offices over the years. Avilene served as a den mother for both of her boys during their Cub Scout years and after her husband’s passing in 1982, she became involved in Lionism as a member of the Lubbock Lioness Club where she helped with many a pancake festival at the Municipal Coliseum. She was and accomplished seamstress, making many of her family’s clothes throughout the years, including all the square dance outfits for both her and Oren. She was always sewing something even up until the last couple of years. She was known as the “Shuffleboard Queen” of Pendaries Park, New Mexico where she enjoyed spending most of the summers since 1992 when she acquired a lot there. She joined New Testament Baptist Church in 2014 and was an active member there until recently when her health began to decline significantly.Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Lonnie (Tammy) and Ronnie (Jo Ann) of Lubbock; two sisters, Corene Spencer and Ilene Christopher, both of Lubbock; two brothers, Barton Spencer (Dorothy) and Travis Spencer (Lynda) both of Littlefield; and one brother-in-law, Tommy Kirk (Judy) of Enochs; 11 grandchildren, Dustin Meyers (Alicia), Jeremy Kirk (Stephanie), Casey Foy (Chad), Crystal Peoples (Jeff), Allen Kirk (Sammi), Holly Ditta (Joseph), Jarrod Meyers, Angie Reyna (Marcos), Chad Kirk (Morgan), Kortney Duffy (Michael), Kelsey Hart (Aaron), 23 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. The family would like to thank Interim Hospice of Lubbock and the special nurses and aides that gave her lots of love and care through her final journey on earth.
