How Do I Dress for a Funeral? “Capsule Collection”

There is a great deal of uncertainty about what people should wear to a funeral service.  The family-owned approach at Lake Ridge Chapel led us into a conversation with another local family-owned shop, ChromeTX.  Their Clothing Buyer, Holly Shute, led us in an act of celebrating life through fashion in funeral planning of all places.

Chrome is a clothier of women with a sensibility known simply as Live Humbly Hip.  When we asked Holly what women should wear to a funeral, she was full of ideas.  Even if fashion is not one of your hobbies, Holly and her girls at Chrome give you the insider’s edge, accustomed to tailoring wardrobe decisions to the occasion.

This is the first in a series of blog articles that will detail Chrome’s approach to funeral attire, and even provide ideas for kindness through gifts to give families who are dealing with inevitable grief and loss.  This article starts our series on funeral fashion by addressing the style of “choosing fewer, better things to wear”, otherwise known as a creating a Capsule wardrobe:

Capsule wardrobe is a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.

Chrome has embraced this philosophy and are actively engaged in bringing sensible fashion decisions into the process of shopping for funeral attire, and taking further care in dressing to feel better, long after memorial services.  For the 10 years that Holly has worked in her role at Chrome, she has provided women like those in Lake Ridge Ladies with countless options and versatile choices.

If you’ve visited their facebook page,, you may be thinking, “Would I wear this to a funeral, and will this even be age appropriate?”  Don’t worry, you’re right on track with how Chrome will guide you through the decision making process.  There are several timeless accessories that make an outfit appropriate for a funeral, but also useful for other more casual events.

For instance, with a simple colorful sash or even a kimono, covered shoulders can make a simple black dress more elegant for a funeral, and also cover up the open shoulder straps that could later turn that dress into a nice little number on the town or at a cocktail function.

You may ask yourself, “How do I pick out clothes for a funeral, even at Chrome?”  Lake Ridge Chapel is happy to share that Chrome has a plan for you.  Senior Styling Sessions are available!  This entails two or three separate looks you can create for a photo shoot.  Widows are encouraged to take advantage of this as a free service to focus on a positive self outlook.

There’s no obligation to buy the clothes from a Senior Styling Session, but if you do choose to own what you wore in the store, Chrome provides a 20% discount.  So don’t worry about what you’ll wear to the funeral, or after it.  Go to Chrome and the lovely ladies there will guide you through your options.  You’ll feel great about it, under any circumstances.

Contact Lake Ridge Chapel to arrange your Senior Styling Session, get a good deal on a new dress, and start to build that timeless Capsule Collection in your wardrobe.  You can also call Chrome on (806) 687-8953 and tell them you read our blog article series with Holly Shute.
